Geest Potplanten reduces plastic packaging in phalaenopsis with lighter pot

Dutch nursery Geest Potplanten grows an extensive range of green plants, multiflora and regular phalaenopsis in 12cm pots. By switching to an orchid-growing pot made with 30% less plastic, the company is managing to significantly reduce the grams of packaging for this crop.

“We are always looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of our crops,” says Esther van Geest of Geest Potplanten. “We do this not only by being smarter with energy and crop protection but also, for example, by reducing the amount of packaging to reduce waste.”

“When Amevo introduced their new and lighter nursery pot to us, we were immediately interested in finding out whether this pot was suitable for us. While testing the pot, the growing results also turned out to be extremely good. The choice was then quickly made for us. Of course, the pot is made of recycled material, in this case Post Industrial Recyclate, which we were already used to, only because of the different production method this pot is no less than 30% lighter. Nothing changes regarding the shelf life of our product, obviously a must in the decision-making process for this pot. We are very positive about the results and happy that we need to use less material for the culture pot this way.” concludes Esther.

A normal 12cm growing pot for Orchids weighs about 17 grams on average. The weight of Amevo’s new growing pot is around 12 grams.

For Geest Potplants alone, switching to this new pot means a saving around 15,000 kilos of Polypropylene per year.
