Rising flower prices in Russia ahead of International Women’s Day: factors and implications

According to analysts, prices for flowers in Russia are on the rise ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8. Bouquets are expected to cost buyers 15-20% more on average than last year.

Data reveals that the average purchase of flowers in February 2024 ranged from 25.8 to 32.7 euros for a bouquet, marking an 18-20% increase compared to last year.

With March seeing a surge in demand, bouquet prices are also climbing. Statistics from the “Check Index” show that the average purchase for flower bouquets from March 1 to March 7, 2023, rose by 25% compared to February 2023.

Roses were the most sought-after flower in February 2024, averaging 12.7 euros, a 15% increase from the previous year. Chrysanthemums at 11.7 euros and carnations at 9.38 euros also saw high demand.

Retailers highlight logistical expenses, delays in flower deliveries at the border due to transportation complications, and rising wholesale prices from suppliers, which contribute to the increased bouquet costs.

Sanctions and restrictions on aviation transportation lead to longer delivery times for flowers from countries like the Netherlands and Ecuador, affecting their quality and price.

Furthermore, increased costs for packaging, consumables, rental spaces, and employee wages are adding to the rise in flower prices.
