“The exclusive focus on LED lighting has leveled off”

For some time now, the near end of HPS lamps has been conjured up, but the opposite seems to be the case, says René Polak, Sales Director Horticulture at Ushio. “The exclusive focus on LED lighting has leveled off.”

Ushio is presenting itself under the “Last Man Standing” as one of the last remaining companies that continue to rely on the power of HPS lighting. Their Horturion portfolio consists of single-ended and double-ended lamps and matching power supplies.

“Especially in the cold season, when additional lighting plays a huge role, many greenhouse operators have realized how more than half a million important the additional heat output generated by conventional HPS lighting is,” Rene says. “It substitutes part of the greenhouse heating costs, which would otherwise be even higher, and provides many plants with much-needed warmth to thrive.”

After a period of “either/or” between the choice of LED or HPS lighting, hybrid solutions are now on the rise, “and these consist of a successful combination of LED and conventional lighting with HPS lamps,” René continues.

Since the introduction of greenhouse lighting more than 15 years ago, Ushio has continuously invested in the development of its HPS lamp series and has launched a number of world firsts, such as the first 1000 W lamp with 2200 µmol/s. René is convinced: “Our customers appreciate our consistently high quality, which is characterized in particular by the long service life, stability of the lamps, and high output.”

To ensure this, the production of all Horturion lamps and ballasts has been in the past and will remain in the future at Ushio’s own factory in Poland. “With a capacity of more than half a million lamps per year at full capacity, we’re also equipped for large orders. Worldwide distribution is handled through our distribution center at Ushio, Germany, close to Munich.”

“The time for HPS lighting is far from over. Therefore, it’s good for companies to know a reliable partner at their side,” says René, “and that’s Ushio!”
